Renegades by Frank Marshall (2013)
Portraits of heavy metal culture in Botswana & other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.
What’s more metal than wearing head to toe layers of black leather in the bush? The style here is amazing & complex. Unlike American metal culture, there seems to be an amalgam of several underground subcultures: elements of Goth interpreted through Old Western outlaw, finished with to the more traditional motorcycle & skull iconography. You can tell there is skilled artisanship to the garments. not to mention, that there’s an individuality that shines through. Plus, the “Cannibal Corpse” t-shirt is terrific; the “A real live one” jacket is incredible.
